Single Fairy Orchid - LAV548

The Butterfly and Fairy bud stamps were stamped with VersaFine Clair - Nocturne
The Orchid stamp was stamped with Ranger - Weathered Wood
The Orchid stamp was stamped with Ranger - Weathered Wood
How i created the background:
I used 140lb Watercolor paper and painted random brush strokes of Ranger Oxide Ink,
by dabbing the ink on to my work surface and spraying it with a bit of water so i could use it as watercolor "paint". I used: Mustard Seed, Carved Pumpkin, Mowed Lawn and Abandoned Coral.
I watered the edges of each stroke and then i misted the whole thing and lightly rubbed my fingers over the area to slightly blur it. I had leftover ink on my surface so i dabbed picked that up by dabbing my design into it.
I did not tape the paper down (on purpose.. cause i am impatient at times), so it warped. After it dried, to flatten it i sprayed the back slightly..and then i brought it to my ironing board and ironed the back so it would lay flat.
Now i stamped the Fairy Pods with the VersaFine Clair - Nocturne ink. i put both of the pods on an acrylic block and stamped at the same time.
Then i stamped the Orchid using the Ranger Oxide - Weathered Wood. i slightly bent the stem, so it wasn't straight.. to give some movement.
I got out some acrylic white paint and added a bit of water to it so i could splatter the finished "painting". After this has dried, it is time to add some Mod Podge to seal your work. i do not paint hard because i am working with water based products and i don't want them to change. I also use a soft bristle paint brush. Once this is dry, i ink distress the edges. I used, Ranger - Broken China and Chipped Sapphire.
Next i found some green ribbon in my stash and used my machine to zig zag it down.
Don't worry if you don't have a machine, you can adhere the ribbon down with mod podge or glossy accents.
Now that the "painting" is ready, i needed to work on the Butterfly. To do that you will need some vellum, Versafine Clair - Nocturne ink and clear embossing powder and two small black brads.
Remember to be careful when stamping on vellum because it is "slippery". I stamped the butterfly and then i instantly put the clear embossing powder on it. It is easy to heat emboss because the clear embossing powder turns glossy and the black shows through. Vellum tends to bend, so i use large tweezers from my Cricut kit.
Now i hand cut out the butterfly leaving an edge as you can see in the photo.
Make sure the painting is dry and place your butterfly in the position you'd like. While holding the butterfly with your left hand on the painting, use your right hand to hold punch the body of the butterfly. I make two hole punches about 1/2" away from each other so that i can put two black brads to hold the butterfly so that the butterfly won't move later. (check out the photo)
Attach the butterfly to the painting with the brads.
Prep the base you are going to use. I used a word board from a charity shop*. I painted with black gesso around the sides and 1/2" around the top of the word board, the rest will get covered with the painting.
(*I recycle and use those word quote boards that people give to charity)
Now you can adhere your painting to the *word board base with mod podge. You will need to burnish the painting to the top.
Here is the "magical" part.... while your painting is drying your vellum butterfly wings will raise up. Once the painting is completely dried they will flatten out like the photo. :)
Now i accent the sides and top. I rub Alchemy Wax - Old Denim on top of the black gesso on the sides and the top of the "word art" canvas.
You can now hang up your finished wall art!

All I can say is WOW! Who wouldn't want this hanging on their wall? You are SO very creative :-)
ReplyDeleteAmazing, Bonnie! My favorite part is how the center is full of light and movement, that carries right over into your flower garden! It's a gorgeous creation, and must have been fun putting together! I would not have thought to fade those inks out and use the flowers for a wildflower garden - it makes ME want to BE a butterfly! hugs, de
ReplyDeleteIt is always perfect to get outside the comfort zone and think outside the box. Another original project made by you! Looove it!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous Bonnie. It looks like your butterfly is about to fly out of your beautiful scene and straight into my craft room :-) Love everything about this project!
